Starting 2021 in Guatemala

Greetings once again from Guatemala! After a long journey and a lot of roadblocks along the way we made it back home to Guatemala in the beginning of January. During our time in the States for Christmas we had to prepare our kitties for their big move to Central America. Things were going smoothly; we got veterinarian appointments for Marty and Luna. They got in, got their vaccines, then the “fun” began. Two days after, Marty developed a lump the size of an egg where he received the shots. Back to the vet. The doctor ended up surgically removing the lump, and now, about ten days before our trip, Marty had a six inch wound and 17 stitches – which we were supposed to remove four days after arriving in Guatemala. From there, everything went fine until the day came that we were supposed to take the stitches out. One by one we took out the stitches, and things were going pretty well for our first time taking stitches out of a cat…that is until the entire wound split back open. It was about 8:00 at night, and we were in over our heads. Thankfully, God provided us with friends in our former land lords who were able to connect us to an emergency vet and get Marty stitched back up. We’re happy to report at this point he is back together and has completely healed. That was our first four days back in Guatemala.

Meanwhile, we began our work with SI! We are working together with a missionary named Steven to lead the Sponsorship site. We spend the first two weeks visiting families, visiting schools, and putting together bags of school supplies. In Guatemala, the school year starts in January and we have welcomed many students and their families to come receive their supplies and to pray with them.

As of writing, we are currently working on planning our Bible studies and youth group clubs for the entirety of 2021. Our theme for this year is “Decide”. We are hoping that through this year the kids learn what it means to make a decision to follow Christ, and we are praying that the situation with Covid gets better to a point where we are able to hold baptisms at the end of the year. Please join us in praying for the children who will be coming to our Bible studies, and that they would hear and believe the Gospel.

Getting to Guatemala has been a journey of many ups and downs. At the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021 we were so excited to finally make it into the field and get started working in the community. However, just like the entire world, COVID 19 has effected our ministry as well. As of the beginning of January, Students International will be using 5% of our funds to fund our support staff that is based in the United States. What that means for us is that we need to raise an additional 5% of support. If you are currently one of our financial parters, would you consider increasing your monthly support by 5% to help us be fully funded again? There is also another way our current partners could help us make up a little bit of that loss. When you support us monthly via ACH, we receive all of your donation. However, if you use a credit card, there is a percentage taken off by the credit card company. To make sure the ministry receives all of your donation, please change your monthly donation by emailing Students International at students@stint.com.

Thank you for partnering with us in this ministry! Please continue to pray for SI Guatemala as we share the gospel through occupational ministry. We also appreciate your prayers for us as we learn the culture and language. We are excited to see how God works here in Guatemala and through you!
